It may also be called a telescopic boom, mobile elevated work platform (MEWP), or aerial work platform (AWP).

As you would expect, the name originates from picking fruit from tall trees but it is has now migrated to be used across various industries, including construction, painting, maintenance, and utility work.

It consists of a platform or bucket at the end of a hydraulic lifting system and is generally mounted on a trailer or truck between work locations.  

This provides a safe way of lifting workers and tools to elevated areas. Although the terms Boom Lift and Cherry Picker are often used interchangeably, strictly speaking Cherry Pickers cannot be moved around whilst raised and aren’t self-propelled: whenever the basket needs to be repositioned it must be fully lowered and safely stowed and the trailer or truck bed it is attached to repositioned and the outrigger legs redeployed for stability.

Cherry Pickers are ideal for straightforward vertical lifts and best suited for jobs that require access to moderately high areas with some manoeuvrability. You can also find small Cherry Pickers to fit smaller jobs. Cherry Pickers usually have smaller access platforms designed for one or two people and their tools. They can be powered by electricity (rechargeable battery) or diesel. To instigate cherry picker rental, you must be over 18 years old, and have had suitable training to operate a MEWP, including all types of picker.

They can reach from 30ft (9m) to 160ft (50m) with many options in between.

Working indoors or outdoors?

An electric model is normally recommended for indoor work where low noise and low emissions are important, whereas you may need a rough-terrain model for outdoor use.

Is horizontal and vertical reach required?

If so, estimate both the sideways outreach required as well as the height.
