Cherry Pickers & Boom Lifts

A Cherry Picker is a type of aerial work platform providing temporary access to high places of work. It may also be called a telescopic boom, mobile elevated work platform (MEWP), or aerial work platform (AWP).

It consists of a platform or bucket at the end of a hydraulic lifting system. Used in many industries including warehousing, industrial cleaning, and construction, they provide a safe way of lifting workers and tools to elevated areas. Come are telescopic (stick booms) which have a straight arm but can reach extensive heights.

Others are articulating which means they have a ‘knuckle’ and can raise workers up and over obstacles.

They can be powered by electricity (rechargeable battery) or diesel. You must be over 18 years old, and have had suitable training to operate a MEWP, including all types of cherry picker.

Things to consider are:

1. Height - they can reach from 30ft to 100ft with many options in between.

2. Working indoors or outdoors? An electric model is normally recommended for indoor work where low noise and low emissions are important, whereas a rough-terrain model may be needed if you are outdoors.

3. Is horizontal and vertical reach required? If so, estimate both the sideways outreach required as well as the height.
